Improve Indoor Air Quality Tips

Every year we go through the same routine to get ready for spring. We clean out our homes of unwanted items as we make room for new ones, dust and mop every nook and cranny, and take care of routine maintenance.

One of the greatest responsibilities during spring cleaning is the need to focus on the quality of the air inside your home. Why? Poor air quality inside your home can have an adverse effect on our health and make seasonal allergies absolutely unbearable. Tiger Services put together these steps to take for improving the quality of your air indoors.

Control the Intake of Dirt & Debris

The first thing to keep in mind is that you are in control. This simply means that you can reduce the amount of contributing factors to that poor quality air.

  • If there are people in your household who smoke, make sure that they do it outside.
  • Dirty shoes and clothes are contributing factors too, so keep the soiled shoes and clothes at the back door. It is better for them to walk through the house barefoot than trek the soil from the outside world into your carpets.
  • The same goes for family dog. Wipe off the paws of the dog before letting it back inside.

Remove Pet Dander

Many families have at least one pet, and anything named “Fluffy” is likely introducing pet dander into your home. Vacuuming and dusting your home weekly is a great way to limit the buildup of pet dander, greatly improving air quality

Pet dander embeds itself in the carpets, your clothes, and the drapes hanging in the window. It can also be found in the air filters in your home. The longer dust and dander stays there, the harder it will be for clean air to circulate.

Clean Your Ductwork

One thing that can seriously hamper the quality of the air in your home is mold. Mold can build up in sneaky spots and then spread spores throughout the home. Damp surfaces, an ideal home for mold, should be corrected immediately and leaks from faucets or pipes should be attended to as soon as possible.

While many homeowners are vigilant about cleaning up mold, most don’t even consider their ductwork. Mold buildup can develop inside your dark, humid air ducts where you won’t notice it.
