Homeowners with air conditioning systems older than 9 years old should be aware of all the changes the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is mandating at the end of the year. Fortunately, there are still a few options so not all homeowners will be inconvenienced with the changes.

The Federal mandate from the EPA states that HVAC manufacturers must phase out the production of all HVAC systems that use the R-410a refrigerant. The R-410a refrigerant is still widely used in the US. It is easier to handle and work with and is not at the mercy of all the sensors malfunctioning inside the new 2025 models. Even though the HVAC equipment using the refrigerant will cease to be in production, you can rest assured the supply of R-410a refrigerant will still be available for many years. The mandate does not require homeowners to change any equipment at this time. It only requires the new HVAC systems in 2025 to utilize the new more eco-friendly refrigerant.

The upcoming refrigerant, R-454b, is more expensive to handle due to the specialized installation tools it requires, has to have safety sensors inside the equipment, and will need to have both outdoor and indoor equipment replaced simultaneously.

In addition to the additional expenses with the new style R-454b refrigerant, the equipment designs are apt to be prone to sensor issues and nuisance calls. Until the designs are more refined and tested more extensively, we are recommending homeowners take advantage of the more cost-effective choice and the more fail-safe R-410a air conditioners.

Upgrading the air conditioning system in 2024 allows San Antonio homeowners to benefit from the current availability, flexibility, and CPS Energy Rebates.
