Why is my house so humid? Dehumidifying your muggy house in the late summer months.

You might be sitting in your home right now, wiping a bead of sweat from your brow and wondering “how do I get rid of this humidity in my San Antonio house.” We hear your cries and are here to help.

The humidity in your house is likely to be high in the late summer, which can be caused by a number of factors. One major reason why your house might be humid in September and October is the milder temperatures outside causing the air conditioner not to run as much. Outdoor temperatures are lower and the sun is no longer heating up your home as much as it did earlier in the summer. Your house gets humid because that AC was also acting as your dehumidifier.

High humidity
Another reason for the muggy feeling is your indoor activities remain the same year-round regardless of whether the AC is on or not. You’re still taking hot showers, drying the wet laundry, cooking and washing the dishes which is contributing to how much moisture is in the air. If the AC isn’t cycling on to cool the house and removing that moisture, the indoor humidity will naturally increase and create an uncomfortable living environment. When you’re spending 90% of our time indoors during these late-summer months, it’s important that you ensure the air you’re breathing is free of the conditions, such as the moisture that breeds mold and mildew that can lead to horrible sickness.
What does humidity in the home do to my health?

When your home is too humid, not only is it uncomfortable but it can lead to a host of problems, including mold growth and increased risk of respiratory diseases. The quality of the air you and your family are breathing will deteriorate the longer your house retains a high humidity level.

Dust mite colonies will also grow in humid areas. Settling in carpets, beds and other fabrics, they absorb the moisture in the air and will thrive the more humidity they can get. Dust mite colonies are not good for your health and can trigger asthma and other health issues.

Humidity is definitely not an evil that must be removed. Not having any humidity at all can also impact your health, leading to asthma, allergy flare-ups, and more. Therefore, keeping your humidity levels within the range of 30-50% is the optimal choice. To measure the moisture in the air of your home, it’s a good plan not to leave it up to chance. A hygrometer is an inexpensive measurement tool that can be bought off of Amazon that will can you the relative humidity reading.

How do I get rid of humidity in my San Antonio house?

There are many small steps you can take to get rid of the humidity in your house:

  • Use your exhaust fans when you can. This includes the one over your stove and in your bathrooms. Not turning them on or waiting until after the air is affected, will only add to the problem.
  • Ask your family to take cooler showers. Yes, we love those hot showers too, but even turning down the temperature by a few degrees can make a difference.
  • Try hanging your clothes outside to dry if you can.
  • Have your home inspected for leaky pipes that may be contributing to the issue.
  • Lower the temperature in the house so the AC cycle on more often. This may not be the most cost-effective option, but air conditioner can assist in drying out the air inside your home.
  • On some occasions – open the windows. If you use a fan to keep air moving inside, turn them around so they blow the humid air from inside out, and then have a window on the opposite side of the house open to replace this with the dryer air outside.
If you continue to see high levels of humidity in your home even if you have taken other measures to lower levels, you may want to consider a dehumidifier. In fact, a dehumidifier should be one of your first decisions if you notice higher than average moisture in your home, because as you’re making a small impact with the steps above, a larger effect can be achieved through a high-end dehumidifier. If you do not want to handle the maintenance of the portable units, Tiger Services offers whole-house dehumidifiers that tied into your existing air ducts.

Do I need a dehumidifier in San Antonio?

Many people may think that switching the fan for the AC to the ON position is enough to battle the humidity in their home. This is not true. It only moves the air around and in most cases, the indoor humidity will drastically increase. We DO NOT recommend leaving the fan in the ON position. During the months when temperatures reach anywhere between 60-70 Fahrenheit outside, turning the AC back on isn’t reasonable. This weather is when a dehumidifier can come in handy.
